Vladimira Klumpar

Vladimira Klumpar (American, born Czech Republic, 1954), Sea Subject 1, 2010, cast glass. 75th Anniversary Gift of Arlene Schnitzer, 2014.56.

Vladimira Klumpar uses glass for her kiln-cast abstract sculptures focusing on the effects of light and reflection, color-light density, and optical geometry. She began her studies at the Specialized Glassmaking High School in Zelezny Brod and finished nearly a decade later at the renowned Academy of Applied Arts in Prague under the tutorship of Professor Stanislav Libensky, the mentor to three generations of artists. She fully absorbed the Libensky lessons about the malleable properties of glass, the interior and exterior form, but also, the importance of nature as the ultimate guide to authentic shape and proportion. Klumpar has built upon Libensky's concepts of color, light, and optical geometry creating captivating sculptures with mystical optics and mass.
