Udo Zembok
Udo Zembok (German, born 1951), Noir – Orange Jaune, 2010, cast glass. Gift of David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard, 2019.123.
The painter and sculptor, Udo Zembok, studied at Alanus University for Art and Social Sciences in Germany before experimenting with kiln-formed glass in The Netherlands in the mid-1970s.
His works in glass include small-scale “sculptural paintings,” multi-media constructions, monumental installations, and architecture-related commissions. He addresses the perception of color, light, and space to reveal an inner third dimension in a translucent medium. The artist explains: “I work in the third dimension of color, as a sculptor who explores the language of color in the color space.”
This minimalist work offers perceptual situations with the spectator as the reflections of the surroundings emerge in various ways – such as an act of contemplation or a look at one’s reflection generated by light and color.
