Lisa Cahill
Lisa Cahill (Australian, born 1974), These Woods are Dark and Deep I Know...,2010, kiln-formed and enameled glass. Gift of David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard, 2019.94.
Lisa Cahill is known internationally for her kiln-formed glass sculptures and installations. After graduating from Monash University, Victoria in 2000, she has been an independent studio artist receiving numerous awards, grants, and international residencies and relocated to Sydney in 2004.
Cahill’s artworks reveal her affinity with the Australian landscape, often entwined with her Danish heritage. Cahill’s dreamlike images invite viewers to draw associations with their own remembered landscapes, resulting in a meditative and emotional response.
In this kiln-formed glass sculpture, Cahill applies enamel by brushing on a vitreous substance of finely powdered glass. She evokes notions of an ephemeral landscape by manipulating light and the intensity of color through both opaque and transparent layers of glass. Rather than a direct reproduction of the natural environment, she applies her own interpretation of the landscape to create works of art that provide a place for quiet contemplation.
