Jeannet Iskandar
Jeannet Iskandar (Danish, born 1980), Oval II, 2009, blown, cut, sandblasted, and task-fused glass. Gift of David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard, 2019.111.
Jeannet Iskandar received her degree from the Danish Design School in Bornholm, Denmark and then built her own advanced studies program by apprenticing with major glass artists.
This sculpture reveals lskandar's sophisticated understanding of material and form. Uniting the opposing concepts of simplicity and complexity, the wavy ribbon-like components coalesce into three-dimensional patterns.
lskandar drew inspiration from the mathematical constant Pi and Ravel's musical masterpiece Bolero. "The thread joining these," says the artist "is a simultaneous complexity of structure and simplicity of expression. They expand with each additional sequence, yet each sequence contributes to the same basic pattern, which makes the expression calm and whole." Similarly, subtle breaks in the visual rhythm of her blown, cut, and tack-fused ovoid sculpture increase their overall refinement. Both organic and meticulously composed, lskandar's ethereal constructions of suspended light and line meet at a confluence of rhythm and repetition.
