Persimmon Bistro hosting a Holiday Craft Beer Social this month
By ANDREW SMITH · DECEMBER 3, 2019
When Art Vasquez, one of the Coachella Valley’s early craft beer pioneers, assumed ownership of Persimmon Bistro earlier this year, we knew there had to be something good in store for the local beer scene. Vasquez opened Babe’s BBQ & Brewhouse with Dan Callender back in 2002. It’s the longest-running brewery in the Coachella Valley at 17 years, and for much of that time was the only one.
Located in the Palm Springs Art Museum, Persimmon Bistro has received quite a major revamp. It features a well-curated “wine country” style menu, hand-selected wines, and an excellent selection of craft and Belgian beers.
Now, Vasquez will go one step further with Persimmon Bistro & Wine Bar’s first annual “Holiday Craft Beer Social.” As the poster encourages: “Come and get social with your craft beer brethren.” When I asked Vasquez for his inspiration behind the event, he told me: “Holiday beer tastings have been something I’ve been involved with since my first brewery gig going back to 1998.”
When the event was first announced on social media, it consisted of five 6 oz tasters. That has since been expanded to six 6 oz tasters. Two of the beers are secret beers, but the four announced are: Delirium Noel, The Bruery 12 Drummers Drumming, Stone Enjoy By 01.01.2020, and Fremont Winter Ale. I’ve seen the two secret beers, but was sworn to secrecy beforehand. I can guarantee that they’re a couple of barrel-aged rarities that are certainly worth the ticket. Vasquez did post a couple of sneak peaks on social media …
There will also be a buffet spread of hors d’oeuvres to accompany the beers. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and you can show up any time within that time frame, as long as supplies last. At $19.95 for six holiday beers, including rarities, this promises to be a fun little event. It’s billed as a “Social” and should get quite a turnout. Interest has already been strong. It’s also Street Fair night, making for a perfect little outing.
Earlier this year, I wrote a piece titled: "Persimmon Bistro bringing Craft to the Palm Springs Art Museum" The beer list was above commendable back then and it’s even been further expanded since. As expected, Art Vasquez is creating a new imprint on the local craft beer scene. He explained: “California and Belgian beer are doing really well right now at the bistro with the tourists. Our list rocks and is about to get better!”
