For a few years in the 1970s (1975-77) and the 1980s (1985-86) Joel D. Levinson (American, born 1953) photographed flea markets throughout California, virtually every Saturday and Sunday. From San Diego to Crescent City, Levinson photographed more than forty flea markets. Each market had its own ambiance and characteristics, and each was an extension of its surrounding communities.

All 40 gelatin silver prints are presented in the order they appear in the portfolio gifted by J. Patrick and Patricia A. Kennedy, respecting the chronology of their production as well as the artistic direction of the photographer.

Exhibition curated by Christine Vendredi, Chief Curator, Palm Springs Art Museum.
