TAG is a forum for teens to critically engage in art on multiple levels by directly placing them in decision-making roles. This is a year-round program in which participants will help inform decisions about teen workshops and programs, plan the annual Teen Meet the Museum party, engage in special artistic opportunities, and explore their intellectual and creative potentials.
Meetings will be held once a week. For more information and an application please contact Emily at 760.322.4886 or .
Made possible in part by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.
Teen Docent Program
The Teen Docent Program is an exciting opportunity open to all high school students in the Coachella Valley. Participants will come to the Art Museum for three weeks in August to learn how to be docents. They will study art history, practice public speaking, meet new people, and gain confidence in a fun and open environment. Teens will engage in and learn how to encourage open discussions and multiple interpretations of the artwork on display at the Art Museum. As one Teen Docent said, “I’ve never been in a program this fun and educational at the same time.” Activities, guest speakers, and a field trip are all a part of the experience.
During the month of September teens will come to the Art Museum to practice their tours and beginning in October they will lead 4th and 5th graders by sharing their knowledge and skills. As mentors, the Teen Docents are able to connect with and encourage the children on the tours. One fifth grader wrote to her Teen Docent, “Thank you for being a great Teen Docent. I want to be just like you. I can’t wait to see you again.”
In addition, participants who complete the program receive school credit, a stipend, and a one-year complimentary membership to the Museum. If you or someone you know is interested in applying please contact Emily at 760.322.4886 or for an application.
Teen Docent Program is sponsored by the Jeanette C. McIntyre and Frederick (Lash) McIntyre Charitable Foundation Trust.

TeenStudio Projects is a two-week summer art program created especially for teens ages 13 to 18. A variety of workshops, presented by a team of museum educators and visiting artists, encourages young people to make their own personal connections to art by providing them with access to the Museum, artwork, and artists of their time. In addition, the program provides an opportunity for teens to meet other creative and like-minded individuals.
Learning a fusion of hip-hop and jazz moves to the latest music with dancer and choreographer G. Madison, IV, teens will dance and create a performance for family and friends on Saturday, July 28th. Photographer Chari Godakanda will blur the boundaries between traditional and digital photography by leading participants in the creation of photomontages. Teens will have the chance to use their creative and destructive potential working with altered book artist Kimberly Nichols by dismantling and reassembling books to create new and unique pieces of art. Using self-portraits as a starting point, contemporary Native American artist Bunky Echo-Hawk will lead a workshop that examines the use of color, symbols, and perspectives.
The Art Museum will provide a limited number of need-based scholarships. All applications for scholarships are confidential. For more information and a brochure please call 760.322.4886 or email .
